This is a very vital part of our spiritual walk with God. When a child is born in this world, over a period of time it grows. If the child does not grow physically and mentally, it is declared retarded. Hence it is a natural need for a child to grow and develop.
Similarly in Christian life too, if a person does not attain salvation, or is not saved by the blood of Jesus, he or she shows no growth in his or her spiritual life. They are deemed spiritually handicapped. Such people’s spiritual growth has not been at par with their physical growth, especially in their Church life. They remain ground-level nominal Christians, going to every Sunday, attending the mass, coming back to their routine, and remaining a vegetable with no use to themselves, or to the Church, or to Christ.
II Sam 5:10 says "David grew great, and the LORD God of hosts was with him."
We cannot expect God to be with us if we do not grow with Him. David grew day after day and God was with Him because he grew with God and God’s anointing was upon him (I Sam 16:13).
Luk 2:40 says "And the child (Jesus) grew, and waxed strong in spirit, filled with wisdom; and the grace of God was upon him."
Luk 2:52 says "And Jesus increased in wisdom and stature, and in favor with God and man."
Jesus too grew physically and spiritually and God was with Him. As a rule, we need to grow in our spiritual life. The growth is measured by the growth we receive and attain from God’s wisdom and God’s stature which may lead to favor from God. Our Savior and role model is Jesus and we must have a life like Jesus’, and our growth should be like that of Jesus’ growth in this world. That’s why the Bible says in 1Pe 2:21 “For even hereunto were ye called: because Christ also suffered for us, leaving us an example, that ye should follow his steps.” Let us also follow the footsteps of Jesus and grow like Him as He grew spiritually in God’s wisdom and God’s knowledge.
Gen 5:24, Enoch walked with God. 6:9, Noah walked with God.
Growing with Jesus is walking with God!
HOW IS THE GROWTH MAINTAINED?
Walking with God is nothing but growing in the Word of God. God’s command is to read the Word of God day and night (Joshu 1:8). Deu 11:19 "And ye shall teach them your children, speaking of them when thou sit in your house, and when thou walk by the way, when thou lie down, and when thou rise up." Deu 6:7 “And thou shall teach them diligently unto thy children, and shall talk of them when thou sit in your house, and when thou walk by the way, and when thou lie down, and when thou rise up."
Reading the Word of God and meditating on it every day and night enables our growth with God and thereby facilitates our walk with God in our everyday life.
Secondly, to be with God can be by means of praying with God and praying to God all the time
Psa 119:97 "O how love I thy law! It is my meditation all the day." Like Ezra, we can also walk with God by meditating on His Word all day long.
And this is why Jesus prayed everyday early in the morning to be with God (Mk 1:35), everyday after noon (Mt 14:23), and every night (Lk 6:12).
